The Exercise & Sports Science Club
is a student-centered organization. We understand that
students have school and work-related obligations that make it
difficult to find time for a student organization.
It is with this in mind that the ESS
Club has compiled a statement of purpose for membership that
will give students a better understanding of what the benefits are
to being part of a registered student organization.
- Transcripts - In
addition to your academic transcript, Texas State students will
be furnished with a transcript reflecting involvement in campus
activities and student organizations. This will be a
powerful tool for graduates when compiling resumes. Active
involvement in a registered student organization like the ESS
Club will be reflected on these transcripts and shows both
student involvement in his/her university as well as a
commitment to professionalism in his or her field.
- Experience - In addition
to the knowledge ESS Club Members will attain regarding the HPER
field, members can also expect to learn important work-related
skills that will make them more marketable when looking for a
job, such as organizational skills, fundraising and leadership.
- Networking - By
attending professional events like the annual TAHPERD
convention, ESS Club members will be afforded the opportunity to
meet professionals within the HPER field and form relationships
that will offer many benefits such as mentorship, employment
opportunities, continuing education opportunities and
professional references. Conventions attended and
membership into their governing associations can also be listed
as experience on resumes.
This statement of purpose for
membership reflects just some of the general reasons for
joining the Exercise & Sports Science Club. ESS major-specific
services offered by the ESS Club are outlined below. |

The ESS Club is always improving its member services
to provide a rich and dynamic academic experience for members in several
areas. Professional
As a professional organization, the ESS Club
works through several services to bring current information from the
Health, Physical Education and Recreation fields to its members.
Some of these include:
- Guest Speakers with unique knowledge
and perspectives of the Health and Physical Education fields.
- Career Counseling is provided by both
the ESS Club's Advisors and information compiled from the Texas
State University Career Services Office.
- Professional Conventions are attended
annually (most notably the TAHPERD Convention) to provide ESS Club
members the opportunity to become active participants in the HPER
fields as early as possible.
Academic
- Extra Credit is available from
various professors within the department for active members.
Contact an essclub@txstate.edu
or any Officer/Sponsor with questions regarding how you can receive
extra credit from your professor.
- Academic Advising is offered by the
ESS Club's Advisors upon request and through HPER and College of
Education Academic Advisors for ESS Club Members. Not sure
where to go? The ESS Club can get you pointed in the right
direction. Just ask an Officer or advisor for more
information.
Social
- Tailgates are regularly attended by
the ESS Club. We provide food, beverages, a prime tailgating
location, activities, and fellowship with other ESS Club members and
students. Partnered tailagates are also conducted with local
businesses and groups such as Texas Roadhouse.
- Trips are taken to various events
including the annual TAHPERD Convention. The ESS Club also
participates in team-building activities such as Texas State
University's
G.O.A.L. Program.
Service
- Volunteer Work is another cornerstone
of the ESS Club's structure. We take part in at least one fall
and spring service project geared to providing members with the
opportunity to give back to the San Marcos Community as well as
further their knowledge of the Health and Physical Education fields.
